Fireman killed in Saba shooting

A shooting in Saba just before 9:00pm Friday has claimed the life of a local fireman. Police arrested two suspects a little more than an hour later.

The victim is Sheldon Johnson, who would have celebrated his 33rd birthday today, Monday.

Sheldon Johnson.

According to the Caribbean Netherlands Police Force KPCN, the deceased was shot in the village of Hell’s Gate and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. He was pronounced dead shortly after.

Surveillance camera footage from a neighbouring house captured four gunshots, followed closely by a man running down the road.

Police arrested two people that night, and a coast guard vessel took one of them to St. Eustatius early Saturday.

Mobile phone videos taken at Saba’s harbour, which are circulating on social media, depicted a handful of angry men cursing and hurling threats as law enforcement officers were transferring one of the suspects to the waiting coast guard boat.

At least two of the group were Johnson’s colleagues at the Caribbean Netherlands Fire Department BKCN.

Johnson’s murder has deeply shocked the small island community, where killings happen once every several decades. Saba’s previous homicide, a case of strangling, occurred in 2015, while the last fatal shooting took place in 1989. At least three firefighters from St. Eustatius came to Saba on Saturday to augment the latter’s branch as they mourn the loss of their colleague.

KPCN has appealed for anyone with information about the crime to come forward. To do so, persons can call 911 or the police’s anonymous tip line 9310.

Reports indicate that the victim and the suspected shooter were on opposing sides of a public brawl that occurred earlier this year in The Bottom. Police have not confirmed whether this fight, which involved multiple people, is linked to Friday’s shooting.

  1. May Almighty GOD Guide our hearts and Minds in understanding the profound impact of treating people right and justly. We can not take Justice in our own hands!!! I feel deeply Sorry for what happen to Sheldon and also for his Wife, children, family and Friends!
Nonetheless, Violence begots more Violence!!! No one has the Right to take someone’s life!!! Because GOD is the Creator of Life!!!
On the Other hand No One has the Right to Beat People Brutalize and de- humanize another Human being in Group or Gang!!! Some Saba People were saying that This was done to the Shooter previously: because he is an Immigrant they did This because the Shooter is from St. Maarten, he is not from Saba or Raised on Saba! So, they took Advantage and Abused the Shooter physically previously! This type of mentality needs to be addressed!!! I hope that these Men who think This way see the Results of there Actions, of there Violence , it brought more Violence!!!
If The Shooter took these extreme Actions is because he felt emotionally compelled to do so through the hurt and pain he was feeling after being Beat and being let down by the Justice System on Saba.
I myself was once Beat on Saba: was a Victim of Violence, I went to the Police, nothing was done!
So, I know from experience This feeling of being let down!!! I did Not take Justice in My hands, I left it to GOD!!!
Every little Action – gives a reaction! You reap what You Sowe and only GOD Knows!!!

    • All I got to say is, may God be with you.
Now I know how you feel about this whole thing.
Sounds like a saban who will set up a saban.
No matter what happened to you, you don’t have the right to kill someone.
And what you don’t know on Saba, if you really have a problem with people, you can always arrange a one on one with the persons.

Don’t be talking nonsense about he didn’t have no other choice.

He chose to bring that way from St.Maarten with him to Saba while he fully well knows that he came Saba to get away from that St.Maarten life style
But he bring it to saba knowing if it was St.Maarten, they would be killed because in St.Maarten when a gang jump you, you would be killed
And as for you talking about you got beat up on Saba did anyone killed you? No but you still bring it up time to time as if it was a joke.
Saba fights are mostly for fun and drunk people not people fighting and killing with a clear head.

  2. Violence begots more Violence!!! This has to be Addressed!!

  3. I did not know that if you came to Saba from St Maarten……you are considered an “immigrant”. LOL !
