When First Caribbean Bank had intention of stopping service to Saba island, they did relatively the same thing. Could it be that RBC is contemplating the same thing as well?

The mention of “equal opportunities for Saban students” caught my attention immediately, because this connects directly to something I have been quietly thinking about — the parallel between small island communities gaining access to mainland social protections and the broader picture of how young people actually fare in the labour market once those protections exist on paper. Rights on paper and real outcomes can diverge quite significantly.

The unemployment benefits starting January 2027 are genuinely meaningful. But one thing worth raising: implementation timing matters enormously for young people specifically. If the benefit structure arrives without parallel investment in vocational pathways or recognition of qualifications earned on Saba, you risk a mismatch. Students return home or stay in the Netherlands without clear footing either way.

I have seen this play out in different contexts — families navigating systems where the social floor exists but the ladder above it is unclear. It creates a kind of limbo that is frustrating for everyone involved.

I am curious whether the Commissioner’s meetings addressed any timeline for aligning student support with the 2027 benefits rollout, or whether those two tracks are still being treated separately.

I am surprised that the search did apparently not include Search and Rescue Dogs. Are these dogs not available on SXM or other nearby islands like Puerto Rico? Even a dog team from the US could be present within a few hours…… If there are no S&R dogs nearby, isn’t it an idea to discuss this with the islands in the area?
